Pokémon Trainer Riley – Who’s He?

March 2, 2013

After meeting up with Shihan, an old friend of John and mine for the first time in almost a year, we wanted to offer to let him join us in our Pokémon Platinum cosplay. Looking at sprites from the Gen 4 games, we stumbled across one that I couldn’t recognize. He looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out who it was. That sprite plagued me as I searched through every generic trainer you can battle in Platinum.

Then Shihan mentioned that he looked like Sir Aaron from the movie “Lucario and the Mystery of Mew”.

It hit me like an unabridged thesaurus to the cranium.

The reason I couldn’t figure out who he was was because you fought ALONGSIDE him, not against him.

Meet Pokémon Trainer Riley, AKA the only decent escort mission ever.

Riley is the one in the suit, Sir Aaron is the one in the cape.

Riley was the Iron Island escort mission in Pokémon Platinum. He had a Lucario and partook in really nice Double Battles with you, keeping your party healthy and being useful enough that it makes you wonder why he needed an escort. He has all the healing ever, and a really strong Pokémon.

Not that I’m complaining, because he also gives you an egg that hatches into a Riolu, one of the rarest non-legendaries in the game. And in Platinum, he just hands you HM04 Strength.

Riley’s Lucario has the ability Steadfast, and the moves Metal Claw, Bone Rush, Force Palm, and Quick Attack. I’ve said it before, Lucario got a lot of hype. But for an escort mission, his Lucario was pretty useful.

Later in the Battle Tower and the Battleground, he has a ton of other Pokémon, from Salamence to Regigigas to Entei to Pinsir and more.

Entei. He has an ENTEI. WHAT IS THIS.

Costume outline coming soon, and with this post, I change the category “Cynthia & Looker” to “Platinum Cosplay”.
